It's not a period. just another comma

bismillah..

I'm leaving for Jakarta. inshaAllah
yes, it's like 'seriously...?'

Allah huAkbar...

I really hope that I can get things done before I go.

what dr.d wanna see?

1. clear points on hedges. maybe in terms of strategies, types, language devices and like.
so that I can make sure the RQs and research designs are well catered.

2. coding manual. hee the user and reader friendly one. Allah...

ohh I need to spare rm250 for anas.
remember to collect the data from him. hopefully he managed them well :)

inshaAllah, soon I'll write onhow do I select the categories of hedges, sub categories and how do I do the coding.
of so many definitions and terms as well as types of hedges. I think I should refer to the functions of hedges to select one of which I would analyze through out the study.

of course on the politeness functions inshaAllah.

may Allah ease :)

cohen's kappa

bismillah.

okay, I'm gonna make this short.

yesterday, Kak Fairuz and I went to meet Dr.Faezah Majid, 'The Person' for content analysis for qualitative research. Kak Fairuz has set an appointment with her to ask about cohen's kappa thingy.

to be frank, I seriously have no idea about cohen's kappa and what more pearson's product moment correlation. well, Dr.D said they are the instruments to calculate the statistics for inter-rater agreement's reliability.

so this is the formula:

and this is how we can calculate the kappa's value, considering the value for the chances of agree and disagree:

Alhamdulillah that Allah made me there with Kak Fairuz and Dr. Faezah.

Since I have this mathematical and anti-number problems, it seems that cohen's kappa is not that complicated to be applied in my study.

I just need 2 raters at least to confirm and rate my analysis so that they are considered consistent. A layman is better to be a rater for if he/she is clear with my coding and analysis then my manual is good enough to be understood by a layman.

Although some researchers mentioned that an expert is the best person to rate, but somehow Dr.Faezah's argument is resonable.

According to Dr.Faezah, 0.65 is considered okay for such in-depth content analysis study.
I must the revise how do I do my sampling, the population and what not to get a comfortable figure to generalize and validate my final findings.

What I need to do are:

1. Get clear picture of my unit of analysis, categories, sub-categories and coding. 2. Develop a reader-friendly manual

include 4 columns of:
- unit of analysis / excerpts
- coding
- agree
- disagree

3. Get rater to tick on the agree - disagree parts
4. Count the cohen's kappa value

note:

for the reliability value for the real study, use pilot study's kappa's value. it's enough for reliability and trustworthiness purposes.

so, this is the kappa:

183/189 - 6/189 = 0.937 (kappa's value)

April 16

Yesterday, Dr. D and I were supposed to read master and phd thesis in PTAR1. And apparently, it’s hard for us, lately, to sit and do things together. We’re doing okay inshaAllah, but I think it’s Dr. D’s packed schedule which turns us this way. And plus I should’ve be more independent and mobile as what I used to be once, anyway.

Oh, I’ve somehow lost my handphone. I mean, the very one which Bang Pis lend me last time when I screwed up my flip phone for uncountable times that I’m tired of sending it for ‘ribbon treatment’ again, and again. Due to my indifference, I only noticed the lost on the very evening when I should get myself ready to a trip to shah alam. When I say a trip, I mean, a bus trip, to shah alam. Not a vacation. And consequently, I got no Dr.D number phone and a sim card to get myself connected to everybody. So there goes the frustration and miscommunication. Alhamdulillah, ‘I’ve lost my phone’ is kinda valid and acceptable excuse for me to get rid of Dr.D’s anger that it saved me for the day :).

Now here it is, some items which I really need to work on for this couple of weeks:

1. Data collection

- Classify (purely service)

- Lenght (average lenght)

- Date

- Number of sample

2. Read on hedges

- Functions and classification

- concepts

3. Revisit strategies or types or language features for hedges

- What different shcolars said

4. Revise research questions

- See if present ones are doable :p

5. Revise step and procedures. Or even the focus of study

- Choyy...! this is research. Just do what it takes :p

source out

bismillah,

yesterday i posted on my wall -----> searching for people who are willing to help me out with data collection. anyway, I know my pains are all mine to suffer, but I seriously running out of time.

Hopefully this will help me keep on track.
Thanks to Anas for his help.

Let's see the collection on the next Thursday (26 April 2012). Remember to pay him handsome money ;)

for now...

in the name of Allah, my Lord, my Everything :)

For record.

Alhamdulillah, I talked to kak fairuz about this reflective writing.

Well, being one of her raters made me realized and learned that certain ways on how our mind works could help us to write and reflect for future reference. It's a good learning process though even explaining and explaining and explaining are just not me.
anyway, let's give it a try.
may Allah ease the sailing.
